I thought I'd post this on here before throwing it out on the message board. I was just looking at the possible scoring catergories that are available to be used and I noticed that there is a "quality start" catergory available. I believe MLB defines a quality start at 6 or more innings with 3 or fewer earned runs allowed. My thought would be to lower the point total for wins and add the quality start catergory as sort of bonus points for solid starts. It seems to me (and my team is as guilty of this as any) that there are more and more pitchers picking up wins while pitching 5 innings or pitching 6 or 7 but giving up 6 or 7 runs in the process, but still getting wins due to their team's offense. This change would basically give two catergories of wins, quality and cheap. My first thought was to lower point for a win 5 five and have 5 points for the quality start. This would make a good win worth the same 10 points as it is in the current system. This would also reduce the penalty for losing despite a quality start (see Ben Sheets). If we used the 5 points for a quality start, those points would effectively wipe out the negative points from a loss. I'm not sure if that's what we'd want to do, but we could play around with the points if you all think this is something we want to look into.
The other benefit of this is that it would get rid of the cheapest 10 points in fantasy baseball, the closer win after the blown save.
Unfortunately, there is no differentiation (is that a word?) between quality saves and routine saves.
